The Internet Society India – Bengaluru Chapter, with support from the Internet Society Foundation, successfully conducted a series of Academic Bootcamps on Designing and Deploying Computer Networks (DDCN) across multiple engineering institutions in Karnataka as part of its Academic Hub initiatives.
These bootcamps were designed to strengthen students’ understanding of computer networking through hands-on learning, practical exposure, and real-world deployment scenarios, complementing their academic curriculum.
Participating Institutions
The DDCN bootcamps were conducted at the following engineering colleges:
- Dayananda Sagar College of Engineering (DSCE)
- KLS Gogte Institute of Technology (GIT)
- R. L. Jalappa Institute of Technology (RLJIT)
- Bapuji Institute of Engineering & Technology (BIET), Davanagere
- KLE Engineering College (KLE)
Each institution hosted the program with active involvement from students, faculty coordinators, and academic leadership.
Bootcamp Structure and Focus Areas
The DDCN bootcamps followed a structured, practice-oriented approach, enabling students to bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and real-world networking implementation. Key focus areas included:
- Fundamentals of computer networks and Internet architecture
- Understanding how devices communicate within a network
- Physical networking skills, including Ethernet cable crimping
- VLAN configuration and network segmentation
- Router configuration and basic network management using MikroTik devices
- Introduction to network troubleshooting and deployment best practices
The sessions emphasized learning by doing, encouraging collaboration, experimentation, and problem-solving among participants.
Engagement and Learning Outcomes
Across all institutions, the bootcamps witnessed enthusiastic participation from students who actively engaged in discussions, hands-on exercises, and team-based activities. The programs helped students:
- Gain confidence in working with real networking equipment
- Develop practical skills aligned with industry expectations
- Strengthen their understanding of Internet infrastructure and networking principles
- Appreciate the role of community-driven and inclusive Internet development
Faculty members and coordinators played a key role in facilitating smooth execution and encouraging student participation.
